Programs

Private Lands Wildlife Management in Alaska includes the development of recreational facilities and lodges, commercial hunting and fishing operations, wildlife viewing, and related activities. Several communities have begun discussions of PLWM programs. Two programs already in operation are those at Tyonek Lodge and Nikolski Lodge.

Tyonek Lodge, Alaska

The Tyonek Native Corporation, which controls the lower 13 miles of the Chuitna River across Cook Inlet from Anchorage, manages salmon fishing and black bear hunts. A maximum of 12 fishermen are booked at any given time. Its package fishing trips range from $950 for two days and two nights to $2,730 for six days and six nights. Its four-day black bear hunts cost $2,000 and also include some trout or salmon fishing.

Nikolski Lodge, Aleutian Islands, Alaska

Nikolski Lodge, completed in 2001, is located on a chain of lakes near the Alaska Native Village of Nikolski on the Island of Umnak. The village, with a population of 35, has been continuously inhabited for 4,000 years and is the oldest continuously inhabited town site in the Western Hemisphere. Fishing includes three species of salmon in the ocean, streams and lakes, as well as halibut fishing in the ocean. Hunting includes reindeer from a large and wild herd. There is excellent waterfowl hunting for some of the common species, such as mallard and pintail and for some unique and collectors' species, such as Harlequin, Eurasian widgeon, Old Squaw and Eider. Fees range from $1,490 for three-day fishing, waterfowl, hunting, sightseeing and adventure tours to $3,500 for five-day reindeer hunts that also include fishing and other activities.
